"On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it"
- Jules Renard
We live in the so-called ‘Green Heart of Portugal’, about an hour’s drive away from the nearest city, the nearest ocean beach and the highest mountain of mainland Portugal. We live near, or on the edge of, small villages (like the one on the photo) surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, small to medium sized quintas (1-10 hectares), pine forests and eucalyptus plantations.
In theory, the climate is ideal for growing an abundant variety of fruit and vegetables all year round. In practice it’s hard work because the soils have been degraded with fertilisers and pesticides and the eucalyptus trees consume a lot of water. They also make a major contribution to the threat of wildfires every summer.
So far our water sources are reasonably good. We expect to improve them through regeneration of the soil.
